If you’ve ever thought about booking a boudoir session, chances are you’ve also thought:
“Maybe after I lose a few pounds.”
“Maybe when I feel more confident.”
“Maybe when I’m a little more comfortable in my own skin.”
And if that’s you, I want you to know something: You are not the exception.
In fact, I’d say about 99% of the women who walk through my studio doors tell me they’re nervous.
Real women.
Teachers. Nurses. Moms. Business owners. Brides. Women in their 20s and women in their 60s.
Women who have stretch marks and who have scars. And then women who haven’t worn a bikini in years and women who are convinced they’re “awkward in photos.”
I’ve heard it all.
And yet, somehow, every single week, women leave my studio saying some version of the same thing:
“That wasn’t nearly as scary as I thought it was going to be.”
Confidence is not a requirement for boudoir.
Read that again.
You do not need to show up feeling confident to have an incredible boudoir session.
I think that’s one of the biggest misconceptions about boudoir photography.
People assume the women in the photos felt amazing before they stepped in front of the camera.
Most of the time, they didn’t. Many of them were nervous. Some were terrified. A few considered canceling altogether.
The confidence usually comes afterward.
This is probably the number one question I get before a session: “But what if I don’t know what to do?”
Good news…you’re not supposed to. It’s literally my job.
I will guide you through everything.
What to do with your hands, where to look and how to stand. I’ll show you how to move and how to breathe and how to create natural expressions.
You don’t need modeling experience. You don’t need to practice in the mirror. And you aboslutely don’t need to spend hours watching TikTok posing videos.
You just need to show up.
Let’s talk about the elephant in the room.
Because if I had a dollar for every woman who told me she wanted to lose weight before booking, I’d probably be retired by now.
Here’s what I’ve learned after photographing women for over a decade: The goalposts move.
You lose ten pounds and suddenly you want to lose fifteen. Then you hit the goal and decide you need more time. You wait for the “perfect” version of yourself and before you know it, years have passed…
The truth is, there will always be a reason to wait. But there will never be a perfect time.
Another thing I wish more women understood:
You are not booking a Pinterest photoshoot. You’re not booking an Instagram photoshoot. You’re not trying to recreate someone else’s images.
The best boudoir photos happen when we stop chasing someone else’s version of sexy and start leaning into what feels authentic to you.
Some women show up in elaborate lingerie while others bring an oversized sweater.
Some wear a white button-down and some wear absolutely none of the things they thought they would. There is no right or wrong way to do boudoir.
People often assume they’re investing in photos. And yes, technically that’s true, but what I see happen over and over again is women walking away with something much bigger.
A reminder of who they are. Proof that they can do hard things. A version of themselves they haven’t seen in a long time.
Not because the camera changed them.
Not because Photoshop changed them.
Because they finally gave themselves permission to see themselves differently.
If you’ve been waiting until you’re more confident, more comfortable, more fit, more ready, or more anything…stop waiting.
The women who walk away loving their experience the most aren’t the women who felt ready.
They’re the women who did it anyway.
And every single one of them wishes they had done it sooner.
If you’ve been thinking about booking a boudoir session in Detroit, consider this your sign. You don’t need to be fearless and you absolutely don’t need to be perfect.
You just need to show up.
