Let’s get real for a sec: not every client is your client, and that’s perfectly okay. Knowing when to say “no” is one of the most important skills you’ll learn in your boudoir photography journey—and spotting those boudoir photography red flags is the first step!
I know, saying no can feel a bit awkward, but trust me, it’s a total game changer for your business. Here are a few classic boudoir photography red flags you want to watch for:
1. They Don’t Respect Your Boundaries
If someone is constantly pushing your limits, it’s a big red flag 🚩. Whether it’s about time, pricing, or how you run your sessions, those boundaries are there for a reason. Stick to them!
2. Expectations Don’t Match the Budget
If a client wants a Chanel vision but only has a Walmart budget, it’s probably not going to work out. I get it—everyone wants luxury, but boudoir is an investment! If their budget doesn’t match their high-end expectations, it’s definitely a boudoir photography red flag. It’s a little like trying to get a private jet with a ticket for a bus ride… just doesn’t add up! 💸
3. You’re Not Vibing
Boudoir photography is all about connection and trust. If the energy just isn’t there, don’t be afraid to walk away. A mismatch in vibe is a big ol’ boudoir photography red flag.
4. Photoshop Requests
Okay, let’s talk about this one—if a client asks you to photoshop their body to look like someone else, that’s a huge boudoir photography red flag. 🚩 Boudoir photography is about empowering your clients, showing them how beautiful they are right now—not after some digital magic.
I totally get it, though. We’ve all been there where someone wants to smooth out a few wrinkles, maybe tone a little here or there, but when they start asking for major body alterations, it crosses the line. Think of it like this: you’re not a magic wand-waving fairy, and your job isn’t to change someone’s body into an idealized version of what they think they should look like. Instead, your role is to help them embrace their own body—flaws, curves, stretch marks, and all—because that’s where the true beauty lies.
Let’s face it: photoshop can be a slippery slope. If you’re constantly being asked to make your clients look “perfect” (according to someone else’s standards), you’re not honoring your core values of body positivity and self-love. And let’s be real, you’re also probably spending WAY more time tweaking things than actually doing what you do best: capturing the raw and real.
So, if someone asks you to photoshop them to the point where they no longer look like themselves? That’s the point where you confidently say “no.” Stand by your belief that everyone is beautiful just the way they are—because they are, and so are you!
Now, here’s the thing: saying no isn’t a bad thing! In fact, it’s a power move. It helps you make space for clients who respect your boundaries, your craft, and your vision. Plus, when you stand firm in your values, you’ll attract clients who appreciate you and your work even more. 🙌
So the next time you spot a boudoir photography red flag, trust your gut and do what’s best for your biz. You’ve got this!
